ATP is the more conventional form of energy. It carries much less energy than carbohydrates, fats, or lipids, so it can provide energy to a greater number of types of situations.
ATP is the actual source of energy to power what goes on in the cell. Other forms of energy sources, such as glucose, lipids, and proteins are turned into ATP because the amount of energy provided by the lipid, carbo, or protein is too much to be used by the cell.
